First Lines Fridays

Finally it is Friday! My first full week back at work was a success and I’m not as tired as I thought I would be. Now that it’s the weekend it means that it’s time to get reading and writing (my favourite part of any week).

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? It’s pretty simple really, the rules go like this…

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

So here are the lines from the book I have chosen…

“The servants called them malenchki, little ghosts, because they were the smallest and the youngest, and because they haunted the Duke’s house like giggling phantoms, darting in and out of rooms, hiding in cupboards to eavesdrop, sneaking into the kitchen to steal the last of the summer peaches.”

First Thoughts…

I love long complex sentences. They’re my favourite kind and already I am intrigued to know about the people who are wandering about the house. I’m assuming they are children, which makes me wonder why they are there. These first few lines make me want to read more.

And the book is…

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.

As I stopped reading books a few years ago and only recently picked up the hobby again, I’ve never actually read any of Leigh Bardugo’s books. Shocking, I know, so I currently have Shadow and Bone on my Kindle and the Six of Crows duology in paperback, reading and waiting for me to pick them up.

I cannot wait to start reading these because I have heard so many amazing things and I’m excited! Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments below!
